High cost barrier in council’s bid to repopulate central city By Bridget Rutherford THE HIGH cost of developing and buying in the central city have again been identified as stumbling blocks to repopulating the area. City councillors yesterday voted to begin a new programme of work aimed at accelerating central city residential development. The city council and Government want 20,000 people living in between the four avenues by 2020. But progress has been slow. Last month The Star revealed a study found people were more likely to buy in the outer suburbs because properties were cheaper, larger and more private. City councillors discussed the issue yesterday, after the Development Forum met with those in the industry to see what was holding central city residential development back. Forum chairman and city councillor Jamie Gough said it was expensive. “We’re all aware that the land value in the central city has been propped up artificially and that’s discouraging because the developers are obviously going to go where it’s financially attractive.” •Turn to page 11

On December 21, 1977, New Zealand’s first closed-circuit central city television traffic control system went in operation. On December 22, 1885, the statue of William Moorhouse was unveiled in the Botanic Gardens. On December 23, 1876, the Lyttelton Timeball Station began operation. Its time signals to shipping were superseded by radio signals in 1934.

Ruling ends teen’s run in premier side By Bridget Rutherford NAIA Toaolamai-Holden has played Canterbury representative rugby, tackled Black Ferns and was her club’s top try-scorer last season. But the 15-year-old wing has been told she can no longer play in the Christchurch premier women’s competition because she is too young. “All she wants to do is play and learn,” her mother Tamara Toaolamai told The Star. “If any of my kids said ‘we’re not playing rugby’ then that’s fine because it’s their choice. But they’ve taken away that choice for Naia.” New Zealand Rugby Union rules state girls Nathan under-16 cannot Godfrey play in women’s grades. They also cannot play against boys who are over 13. The women’s rule had not been properly enforced by the Canterbury Rugby Football Union until now. Naia started playing rugby as an eight-year-old. She has been in the same High School Old Boys’ women’s team as her mother for three seasons, and was unaware she had been breaking the rules. “She’s competing with people who are Black Ferns, like Kendra Cocksedge. She’s not getting served up and defeated, she’s seeing what’s possible,” said Ms Toaolamai, who is vice-captain of the team. Mr Godfrey said the CRFU started the Let Her Play programme this year to support players aged 13-16. It will also start a new under-16 girls grade next season. Dunn stables get help to fight case By Gordon Findlater A LEADING horse racing stable under investigation for doping has enlisted a controversial restaurateur and private detective to help fight the case. Robert Dunn Harness Racing Stables, headed by Robert Dunn and his son John Dunn, has been the subject of a Racing Integrity Unit investigation which has dragged on for seven months. Four horses in the care of the of the stable returned positive swabs containing caffeine which were taken at the Nelson Winter Cup two-day meeting on June 9 and 11. The Dunns have claimed that the horses were nobbled – the caffeine was administered by an outside party. The claim has caused rifts within the Canterbury harness racing community, with those accused of the nobbling threatening their own legal action. Racing Integrity Unit general manager Mike Godber told The Star yesterday the investigation had been completed. But the decision on whether to charge the Dunns has been delayed for two weeks after Robert Dunn requested more

The private investigator, Simon Lamond, a former Christchurch police detective now based in Auckland, refused to talk to The Star. But his brother-in-law, controversial restaurateur and former jockey Leo Molloy, who is also making inquiries for the

Dunns, believed the horses had been nobbled. Mr Molloy is the sister of TV reality queen Dame Julie Christie – the wife of Mr Lamond. “There is zero chance they weren’t nobbled,” said Mr Molloy. “I don’t think anyone believes the Dunns did it. “It’s an unfortunate situation. All I will say is that I hope whoever did it is held accountable.

“My role is very minor and I really have little to offer. I have strong feelings about it but not always based on cold, hard facts.” West Coast-born Mr Molloy is a former jockey-turned-veterinarian who became a millionaire with his first venture into the hospitality trade, a student bar called the Fat Lady’s Arms in Palmerston North. He then cofounded the popular Euro Res-

taurant and Bar in Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. Mr Molloy has also previously helped trainers under investigation by the Racing Integrity Unit. But he is often in the headlines for all of the wrong reasons, including: •Launching a string of personal attacks against a tattooed man who was denied service at a bar he owned on the Viaduct Harbour. •Getting into a heated Facebook stoush with a MasterChef contestant. Mr Molloy and Mr Lamond would not say who had engaged them to investigate. Said Mr Lamond: “Talk to Robert Dunn.” Neither Robert or John Dunn returned calls to The Star. But when The Star spoke to Robert Dunn in July he suspected foul play and believed that the horses had been nobbled. He was not at the race meeting in Nelson when the horses returned positive swabs. He has been based at his Pukekohe stables for the past five years, with John overseeing the Woodend stables where three of the four horses were from.

Call for dark sky reserves By Bridget Rutherford CALLS TO regulate light pollution in parts of Christchurch and Banks Peninsula to establish dark sky reserves have been reignited. The Spreydon-Cashmere Community has asked city council staff to provide advice on whether there are any lighting level controls in the city. Board chairwoman Karolin Potter raised the idea. She said the city council could designate particular areas, such as around Summit Rd, part of the residential red zone, Halswell Quarry Park, and areas and beaches in Banks Peninsula, as dark sky reserves where no lights could be installed. Those areas had little light pollution at night already, she said. They would be similar to the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve near Tekapo, where artificial light pollution was strictly controlled. It comes as the city council is in the process of

SUMMER Wendy’s twist upsets lieu day fighter

By Emily O’Connell WENDY’S WORKER Rose Williams is “very disappointed” her union and the fast food chain are now negotiating on lieu days after she won a three-year battle on the issue. Mrs Williams went to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment with the matter after she had been working at the Hornby restaurant for a year. Wendy’s has not appealed the decision. “We haven’t received a challenge that involves Wendy’s,” a spokesperson said. Unite Union national director Mike Treen said they are consulting with Wendy’s as to what formula the company should use to decide a person’s entitlement to a lieu day. He said the draft contract by the union and Wendy’s uses a ‘seven out of 13-day’ rule. So, if a public holiday is on a Friday and the employee works at least seven out of the 13 previous Friday’s, then the employee would be entitled to a day in lieu. But Mrs Williams doesn’t agree with this arrangement and wants to know why fast food companies don’t give lieu

She says it should be simple: “If you work on a public holiday you get a day in lieu.” Mr Treen said the law doesn’t work that way. “I would like that interpretation but I don’t think it’s legal and the authority [Employment Relations Authority] didn’t think it was a legal one either,” he said. Mr Treen said they are doing what they have been told to by the authority. “The authority said you’ve got

to make a determination in each case but here are some guidelines,” he said Mrs Williams said Wendy’s will work out a way to manipulate the rosters like they are now. But Mr Treen said mathematically, they shouldn’t be able to. “It’s very difficult to manipulate without giving someone else an entitlement they wouldn’t have got, when it’s a majority,” he said. Employment Relations Authority member Christine Hickey found Wendy’s breached section 56 and 60 of the Holidays Act. Section 56 says an alternative holiday must be provided to an employee who works on a public holiday if that day would otherwise have been a working day for them. Section 60 sets out how those employees should be paid for the alternative holiday. Wendy’s has been ordered to comply with the two sections, conduct a review of its restaurants and keep records of staff contacted, rosters and leave. It has been ordered to give all past and present employees from the Hornby and Dunedin restaurants their alternative holidays, or the equivalent pay since the restaurants were opened. Wendy’s has also been ordered to do the same for all other restaurants across the country backdated to July 1, 2012. Mr Treen said once the union and Wendy’s agree on a method, they will go back to the MBIE to check “it meets their expectations as well.” Union members will then vote on the new system – which is expected to be put in place sometime next year.

Fun and the serious business of work Most people will spend Christmas Day with family, eating too much and unwrapping presents, but others will head off to work. Bridget Rutherford reports

IMPORTANT JOB: Dr Suzanne Hamilton of Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department will be working on Christmas Day.

WHILE YOU’RE tucking into your Christmas ham and pavlova on Monday, spare a thought for those who will be working. Although many will clock off for Christmas tomorrow, some will head along to work on December 25 just like any other day. Many of those are emergency services personnel tasked with keeping others safe. Dr Suzanne Hamilton will be working in Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department on Monday from 8am-5pm. It will be her ninth time working on Christmas Day. Some of those she was rostered off but offered to work so others who had young children could spend the day with them. Dr Hamilton said often staff brought in Christmas treats, and sometimes they played carols. But she said there was a fine line between having fun and being insensitive. “For some, seeing the staff happy and making an effort to have fun on Christmas Day would raise a smile, for others they’d

find it disrespectful that we were enjoying ourselves whilst surrounded by patients.” She said there were also infection risks and practicality to worry about. “A doctor covered in tinsel isn’t what you want when someone’s vomiting or bleeding profusely.” She said a positive for working on Christmas Day was finding a car park was easy, and patients and families tended to be nicer to staff. “Perhaps they feel sorry for us working. “ Dr Hamilton said they had lots of people come into ED with wounds from opening presents

It’s the small things that bring a smile to your face.”

A Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman said the last planned surgery lists were tomorrow, with people being discharged over the weekend. There would be nurses, doctors, allied health, ward and admin support, orderlies, food services, cleaning staff, labs, radiology, security and operations staff working. “We also have senior nursing, senior operations, lab staff, radiology staff, allied health and medical staff on call and available if required.” The spokeswoman said it was a team effort keeping the hospital running smoothly and providing timely care to those who did need to be in on Christmas Day. WellFood service manager Neville Patrick said they were expecting to feed about 700 patients at Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals alone. University students visit Alibaba

CANTERBURY University students have been given an insight into business at the world’s biggest and most valuable e-commerce company. The Alibaba Group traded more than $25 billion through 1.48 billion transactions on November 11 – Singles Day, a Chinese festival shopping day to celebrate being single – smashing the previous record for a 24-hour period of $17.8 billion. But the Hangzhoubased company worth an estimated Jack Ma $420 billion opened its doors to a group of 30 business management students, who were offered a chance to tour the headquarters and question staff about trade during a five-week trip to China. “They learned first-hand about the complexities of doing business in China,” UC department of management, marketing and entrepreneurship dean Russell Wordsworth said. He said the students had a “barrage” of questions for Alibaba representative Jan

Drink driving mates crash close to each other The legal limit for those under-20 is zero and 250 mcg/L for those over 20. The drivers were heading to Tai Tapu when they crashed. “It is just stupidity really,” Senior Constable Williamson said. “They both knew they would have to get home at some stage and drove anyway.” Lincoln deputy fire officer Roger McClenaghan said the car that landed upside down was “an absolute mess”. “I’m not sure if the second guy was looking at his mate that had just crashed and then crashed himself,” he said. One of the vehicles flipped and landed upside down in a water race on Lincoln Tai Tapu Rd about 10pm. The other vehicle also ran off the road and landed in a dry ditch. Said Senior Constable Andy Williamson of the driver who ended upside down: “I don’t know how the hell he got out. He was lucky he wasn’t killed.”

Golden Oldies countdown steps up By Bridget Rutherford THE GOLDEN Oldies are coming to town – and the countdown is on. In 100 days, Christchurch will host the largest sporting event in its history, the Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Celebration. More than 10,000 people are expected to descend on the city from all over the world to take part, volunteer or watch the month-long event, which will run throughout April. Organised by sport event management, tour and travel company, Vintage Sport and Leisure, the events will be different to any others in Golden Oldies’ history. It will combine 10 different sports. Normally, Golden Oldies’ tournaments for each sport are held in different international cities every two years. But come April, the event will combine 10 different sports. Lawn bowls, golf, squash, football and basketball are new, while the traditional rugby, cricket, netball, hockey and softball will feature as well. The structure was designed especially for Christchurch following the September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011, earthquakes, to show the city is again able to host major sporting events. ChristchurchNZ, which is the city’s economic development and profile agency, will play a large role the event. Attraction general manager Linda Falwasser said it will be a milestone for the city. “Events amplify the spirit of our people; ignite excitement and bring communities together, attracting visitors and stimulating economic activity,” she said. “It is an immense opportunity to showcase Christchurch and Canterbury to an international audience and to show how far we have come as New Zealand’s newest city.” Ms Falwasser encouraged businesses to consider how they could

GOLDEN OLDIES rugby will be immortalised in an international sporting museum. Nearly 40 years after it began in Auckland, Golden Oldies rugby will feature in a permanent display at the World Rugby Museum at Twickenham Stadium, London. It will be part of the Rugby for All display, a section where visitors are introduced to the sport’s diversity, which includes deaf, wheelchair, gay, mixed ability and blind rugby. Museum officer Jayne Linaker said the new display highlighted the different forms of rugby and aimed to encourage more people to get involved. The World Rugby Museum is currently under construction and will re-open at its new location in the south stand of Twickenham in early February. The display will become part of an exhibition which has more than 600 objects in permanent galleries. The museum originally opened in 1996 as The Museum of Rugby. It attracts about 25,000

Taking stock of the city’s progress AS ANOTHER year comes to a close, we take the time to reflect on the year that has been and we look forward to the year ahead. There have been more signs of real progress as the central city starts to come to life and the fantastic new beachside playground in New Brighton has opened. I’d like to give a real high five to the central city developers who have invested so much in putting the heart and soul back into the city. And well done Development Christchurch and the local community on a great job in New Brighton – it truly will become the star destination at the end of the journey from the city to the sea. Speaking of the that, Regenerate Christchurch has focused on engaging the community over the future of the Avon-Otakaro River corridor and I’m looking forward to the next stages. It’s a big project, but we have the time to do it well because we can use so much for transitional purposes in the meantime. At the same time, it is engaging on the regeneration of Cathedral Square. we know that these plans can proceed with certainty. Christchurch has also devel-

oped a reputation for trialling the new technologies of the future – a lot of Christchurch people are investing in electric cars and the city is investing in the infrastructure to support that – e-charging stations have been popping up everywhere. We have also seen a New Zealand-made autonomous vehicle launched and I am hoping that we get the ability to trial it on our 30km central city roads. We have spent the past few months at the city council preparing for the Long Term Plan, which is something every council prepares with its community every three years. It has a 10-year financial strategy (how we pay for what we plan to do), and a 30year infrastructure strategy (how we manage our buildings, pipes and roads). We need our communities to be fully involved because, although we are much better off in terms of what we know about our finances and have our insurance settled, we also have a better idea of what our future obligations will be to finish the work that still needs

to be done. Naturally, we need to set priorities – we couldn’t do it all at once, even if we had the resources to do so. So we need communities to give feedback on that – what comes now and what can wait. Last year, some of the community boards took the draft Annual Plan into malls and to stalls outside supermarkets. We know we connect with more people if we come to you, so there will be more of that next year. Finally, may I offer seasons greetings to The Star team and their readers. Please take care over the summer break and return determined to make the most of 2018. I know I will. I’ve really valued the opportunity to write this column and to receive your feedback. Time to wind down and ‘reflect on what matters’ WHAT A year it has been. Like all of us, I’m looking forward to some down time over Christmas and the opportunity to spend it with family and friends. It is a time to decompress after a busy year, reflect on what matters most to us, and look to the future and what we want to achieve in the year ahead. What is playing on my mind as we enter the holiday season, though, is the knowledge that for many people, that idea of downtime seems like a pretty distant memory. The recent Canterbury well-being survey showed that, while things have returned to a new normal for most of us since the earthquakes, there are still thousands of people who are still in limbo and dealing with the huge stress of unresolved insurance and EQC claims. According to the survey, the latest results show 82 percent of people in our city rate their quality of life positively – with 24 percent rating it as extremely good and 58 percent good. Those are good numbers and show we have a lot to be proud of in the return to normality our city has achieved over the last few years. Those numbers stack up really well against other cities in the country and show that Christchurch is a great place to

live, work and play. However, the results also show 14 percent of people are still suffering the negative impacts of living in a damaged environment or being surrounded by construction work. These people are still having to make decisions about house damage, repairs, and relocation. For these people, they are trapped, unable to move on with their lives. We’ve got to do better for them. That’s why this Government is prioritising establishing an insurance and

EQC arbitration tribunal to speed up the resolution of earthquake claims. It’s also why we saved the Residential Advisory Service, which provides help for people still in these situations. And it’s why we’re working on new ways to speed up claims and get people’s lives back on track. Inventor taking care of nature

Inventor Logan Williams has created contact lenses to help prevent people with photosensitive epilepsy having seizures - and it’s not his first invention. Bridget Rutherford spoke to the 22-yearold about why he came up with the idea, and turning an invasive pest-algae into biodegradable products Tell me about your new invention, Polar Optics. I have a really close friend named Emily who suffers from photosensitive epilepsy. I’ve seen how it affects her life, it’s awful. That inspired me to find a solution to what she was facing. I found out sunglasses helped her quite a lot, but sunglasses have a lot of faults. They don’t cover peripheral vision – so I looked at how I could allow for full-time protection constantly. It led me to looking into contact lenses, because no one had done anything with them for that purpose. Then I looked into 3D printing them. I went to the Eureka Science and Innovation Competition in October where I won the Ministry of Health Gold Scholarship for Polar Optics. I got to meet the governor-general and Bill English, so it was a really cool thing to do. How do Polar Optics work? So photosensitive epilepsy is where flashing white light causes the occipital lobe of the brain to sort of send a warning signal, and the bodily reaction is to go into a fit. Polar Optics are polarised lenses that dampen the intensity of the light so it’s less focused on the occipital lobe. There’s a difference between white light and other surroundings and Polar Optics also break down the difference between the two. Each contact lens is perfectly made for the person so there is full coverage. Did you get to do testing with people who have photosensitive epilepsy? Completely, we did testing. The lenses last a month, and it’s been three months since we did Eureka so they were old and had to be thrown out. Will you begin selling Polar Optics? Bausch and Lomb, a French company, can make the lenses. I own two companies and I am in the business incubator programme, so I want to launch Polar Optics. For me, I wouldn’t go into business where you weren’t making a difference to the environment or helping people. My passion isn’t to make money.

PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER And it’s not the first interesting invention you’ve come up with is it. Can you tell me about Biome? So I invented a method to turn didymo into biodegradable materials such as plastic, fabric and paper. So at the moment I’m making a compact hiking set for food. I will launch a Kickstarter campaign over January and February with a goal to reach $150,000. And every $50 someone puts in, they will get one of these hiking sets. In the set is a plate, bowl, small container, cup and a spork with a knife. It will come in a muslin or mesh bag. How did you come up with the idea? To begin with it was paper. I came across some didymo dried on the river bed and it looked like paper. I picked it up and played with it and wrote on it. But it was the pure price and competitive nature of paper that meant it wouldn’t really work. I wanted to create something with

high value that was good for the environment. Where do you get it from? In summer there is more access to didymo. There are two main places – the Mackenzie Country and there’s the lower and upper Waiau River in North Canterbury. I’ve got the material and have started designing the hiking set, and getting the campaign set up. I’m creating a video now which will talk about the company and how I came up with the idea. Where did the environmental side of your ideas come from? Growing up I loved the environment. I lived in Timaru so went to the Mackenzie Country a lot. There’s something about being a New Zealander, it’s part of my identity. I lived in New Zealand when there was no didymo. I’ve seen the before and after. It just suffocates the waterways and has a big impact on the wildlife, hydro dams, irrigation and boating – it’s horrible and

it’s only a matter of time before it reaches the North Island. If you continually extract the didymo starting from the top of the river, and put the infrastructure in place, you can get on top of it. You’ve won awards for Biome haven’t you? Yes, I’ve won about seven. I got the sustainability award for the $85k challenge and a few scholarships. I was also a finalist in the student of the year award for business and science. It’s not about the awards though. I could have 100 awards, but if I’m not making an impact, then what’s the point? What brought you to Christchurch? I was here for the 2011 earthquake at my grandparent’s house because my grandmother had cancer. I always loved Christchurch, it was my home away from home. One defining moment was when I was on the bus a few months after and this lady stood up and started balling her eyes out. Everyone just went over and comforted her. In a way the earthquake brought the community together. There’s this unified solidarity and support, and I thought ‘this is the city I want to live in’. Canterbury University was also really resilient. It has the Centre of Entrepreneurship with Dr Rachel Wright, which helps build businesses and ADVENTURING: Logan Williams promotes being innovative. This year we went to Kaikoura and enjoys getting had to help the businesses there outdoors, such that were struggling after the as at Otira earthquake. My team actually Valley, with his partner Brittany won, it was really cool meeting all the business owners. Stewart.

Did you always want to be an inventor? Growing up my family didn’t have much. We lived in a really bad rental and there were gangs down our street. My mum and dad worked incredibly hard and dad worked his way up and bought his own company. Now my family is so comfortable, so I’ve seen what can happen if you work hard and I’ve always liked science and writing down ideas. Now they make manuka honey and have a locksmith company, Allied Locks. Do you have any siblings? Yes, I have two little sisters. Can you remember what your first invention was? I made this compounding crossbow. A normal crossbow has one string, I made one with eight strings in a circle, it was about 12 times more powerful (laughs). I designed that when I was about 10. I used to write fiction as a kid as well, I was really into that. What exactly are you studying? I did a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts with honours, and now I’m doing a Masters in Business Management. The science side of things is really theoretical, and I’m doing the business side to learn how to turn ideas into a viable company that is sustainable. I started at Canterbury University in 2014, so I’ve been here for four years and have one more year to go. How long did it take you to produce Polar Optics? About three months. I spent quite a lot of time on it, it was a massive turn around. I had the idea for a while though. I’ve got about 250 ideas, and I’ve written a few papers on different ones. One of the latest ones is to do with the super food spirulina. I’ve designed a method to take chemical run off from dairy farms, and to grow spirulina in it. It cleans water and can be used to feed stock. I’ve entered that in the Alltech Young Scientist of the Year so will find out how I go next year. What do you like to do in your spare time? Me and my partner Brittany like to go camping, hiking, walking and anything to do with the environment. The Port Hills have so much to offer and Christchurch is so close to lots of amazing places. We’re actually just about to get a springer spaniel puppy so that’s exciting. Is there anything you’ve done you’re particularly proud of? I think I’m more proud of New Zealand that a 22-year-old can create these inventions and have support and be able to be successful. The support has been astounding. It’s not just one person who designs something and makes it happen.

MOROCCAN GRATED CARROT AND BEET SALAD Ingredients

PINEAPPLE, GINGER AND COCONUT CRUMBLE Ingredients Filling 1 pineapple 2 Tbsp butter 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 pieces star anise 4 pieces crystallised ginger, finely chopped 3/4 cup coconut milk Coconut crumble

100g butter 160g flour Â˝ tsp ground ginger 50g sugar 80g shredded coconut 1 lime, zested Directions Heat oven to 180 deg C. Peel pineapple, cut into quarters, remove core then slice into small even pieces. Melt butter in a large frying pan, add pineapple, vanilla and star anise.

Cook on a high heat until pineapple begins to caramelise. Add ginger and coconut milk, allow to simmer gently for 10min. Dice butter then rub in flour and ginger using fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir through sugar, coconut and lime zest. Spoon pineapple into a baking dish, sprinkle over coconut crumble mix and bake for 20-30min until crumble topping is golden and fragrant.

Place the grated carrots in a medium sized serving bowl. Place the grated beets into a sieve and briefly rinse with cold water. This will rinse away a little of the excess beet juice that may otherwise colour the whole salad beet red. Pat dry with a paper towel. Then add to the bowl with the carrots. Add the raisins. Stir to gently combine. In a small bowl, whisk together the paprika, cumin, cinnamon, salt, and cayenne. Then add the lemon juice and honey and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over the carrots and beets, then gently fold until the carrots and beets are lightly coated. Let sit for an hour before serving, either chilled or at room temperature, for the dressing to seep into the carrots and beets. Right before serving, stir in a couple tablespoons of sliced fresh mint leaves. Garnish with fresh mint.

There are a few possibilities which may have caused this. In some seasons where air and soil temperatures increase very quickly in spring (as with this spring), there is a tendency for potato growth to be extremely vigorous. It is also possible that your soil is quite rich, especially in nitrogen, which leads to a lot of vegetative growth. Potatoes come in a wide selection of varieties, each varying in size, shape, ﬂavour and timing when they crop and some can have more vigorous top growth than others.

In the end, what matters most is the quality of potatoes beneath the soil surface. Try to refrain from digging amongst the roots to see what is happening down below. Such root disturbance is detrimental to the formation of healthy potatoes.

Keep mounding or earthing up every fortnight by building up the soil around the bottom of the plant. You can even cover some of the new shoots and lower leaves as this will help towards a better crop. Feed plants with Garden Time Chicken and Sheep Pellets.

Keep your garden fresh in the heat AS WE move through summer, keep the garden looking fresh for your outdoor enjoyment. 1. Conserve water – While we may not reach Australian levels of urgency about water shortages, the eco-messages are just going to get tougher from now on. Take a good look at how you use water in your garden and make some plans. Whatever your method, be sparing with the frequency of watering: established plants need only 30min of water once or twice a week, vegetables more.

2. Mulch to save work – Mulch is the instant makeover. It suppresses weeds, makes a tired garden look fresh and slows water evaporation. But only apply it once the soil is good and wet, as otherwise it will not help your plants. 3. Plant locally – Native plants (from your part of the country) are perfectly adapted to your local sun, rain and wind conditions, so they look after themselves. 4. Mow lightly – In the

summer lawns do best when the grass is longer (about 2530mm). The soil and roots are shaded so the lawn does not get sunburnt and more moisture is retained. If you can, leave clippings on the lawn to help conserve soil moisture and feed it. 5. Add water – There is nothing like water to enhance a garden. While a full-scale water feature can get expensive, garden centres now sell small plug-and-go bubbling water bowls.

A TRIO of young Canterbury golfers will head to Vietnam in March for an international amateur tournament named after six-time major winner Nick Faldo. Hiroki Miya, Amelia Garvey and Kazuma Kobori will have a chance to put their names on the world amateur stage at the 12th Faldo Series Asia grand-final after wins in the Faldo Series New Zealand championship at Clearwater on Tuesday. Miya, 17, successfully defended his title at Clearwater, posting tournament low rounds of 68 in both his opening and closing rounds of the 54-hole event. That combined with his second round of 71 led him to finish nine-under-par and take the overall title. Miya finished seven shots clear of Garvey who re-

claimed her girls championship title to top off an outstanding year. Since her admirable display in the 11th Faldo Series Asia grand-final in March, where she was pipped for victory by Japan’s Minori Nagano on a count-back in the girls under-16 division, she has played consistently well. The 17-year-old’s highlights include winning the New Zealand amateur stroke play championship and being the only New Zealand amateur to make the half-way cut in the LPGA Tour New Zealand Women’s Open. By Gordon Findlater SEVEN RIDERS from Switzerland’s national team will start their 2018 campaign racing at the Denton Park Velodrome. The Swiss team will use the Canterbury track cycling summer carnival to prepare for the world track championships in the Netherlands in March. “It all sort of happened by chance. We got an email saying they were coming which we were pretty happy about,” said carnival organiser Clarke Ferguson. Swiss team manager and national coach, New Zealander Ross Machejefski, opted to start the team’s year off in the Kiwi summer to prepare for the world championships. “This tour fits into a onemonth training block in New Zealand for the team to avoid the harsh Swiss winter. The riders are really looking forward to racing in the New Zealand summer and alongside some of Australasia’s best riders,” Machejefski said. The team will be led by experienced rider Thery Schir, who competed at the 2016 Olympic Games and finished fourth in the madison at the 2016 world champs. Also part of the Swiss contingent will be Stefen Bissiger who holds the junior 3000m individual

Turbocharger gives Kia heart and soul By Ross Kiddie KIA’S SOUL is a car which has always struck me as being a vehicle which should have sold better. Sure, there are many of them on our roads, but such is its design I always figured it would appeal more, especially to those who like trendy and others who could see its value as a company billboard or for other mobile advertising. All that aside, the Soul has had a bit of a cosmetic upgrade and a new Soul model has just landed. There’s now an option of the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine which is finding its way across a wider range of Kia product. I first drove the turbo unit in the Pro_ cee’d GT a year or so ago and, of course, in Hyundai’s Veloster. The Soul certainly benefits from the small capacity, forced induction engine, and if you aren’t a turbo fan the car is still available here in 2-litre naturally aspirated form at $35,990 or non-turbo 1.6-litre at $32,490. The turbo GT lists at $37,990 and it would be the car for me, its engine is a real honey and develops healthy power outputs of 150kW and 263Nm, the latter realised low in the rev band at 1500rpm reaching a broad spread to 4500rpm. The significance of those power outputs is that it doesn’t need to work hard to maintain reasonable levels of performance, the benefit is also respectable fuel usage. Kia also claims a 6.9-litre per 100km (41mpg) combined cycle average, that sits well with the 8.2l/100km (34mpg) average figure showing constantly on the evaluation car’s trip computer. At 100km/h the engine is turning over quite lazy at 1900rpm, sipping fuel at the rate of just 4.8l/100km (58mpg). Against the clock the Soul turbo will reach 100km/h from a standstill in a lively 7.5sec, and will provide a solid highway overtake of 5.1sec (80km/h to 120km/h). Power is transferred through a twin clutch automatic transmission, it is a quick-shifting unit with ratios designed to enhance a smooth flow of power. When presented with them at speed there is good balance and reasonable steering accuracy. At over 1.6m the body is quite tall but it doesn’t sway much over the suspension. In turbo form it gets a bit of extra suspension damping which controls that body movement well. Riding on wide (235/45 x 18in) Nexen tyres, their low profile also helps provide that optimum level of grip at turn-in. By sheer nature of its simplistic tube beam rear suspension design, the Soul will never offer sports car attitude, but between the willingness of the engine and satisfactory handling behaviour there is just

enough balance between the two to provide a thrill if the driver wants to push hard. That aside, it is also the clever city street traveller with smooth operating manners and an ease which you would expect from the modern sport utility vehicle. It is a comfortable car to travel in and it is designed so that optimum use of onboard space is created. It is a genuine five-seater and the quintessential, functional family vehicle. The Soul GT also gets sporty features inside and out. There’s unique frontal treatment, side mouldings and a twin exhaust pipe package. Inside, there’s orange stitched leather and fabric upholstery, and D-shaped steering wheel. It also gets a high level of kit for safety, earning it a five-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program rating. In recent years Kia has invested heavily in design and styling. All of the models landing now have unique characteristics which not only look smart but work towards an intuitive driving environment. The Soul has been around since 2009, obviously it has stood the test of time and has always been a car which had the looks at forming a basis for many styling opportunities. With the turbocharged engine, it now has a bit of oomph to go with its look-at-me attitude. Let’s hope Kia doesn’t lose the direction it’s taking whereby motoring should be fun and enjoyable. Good cars like the Soul, and the others within the Kia stable, are here to make a statement.

Is it better to buy or sell first? While buying your first home can be a nerve-wracking experience, buying your second (or third) isn’t much easier. First home buyers may face a whole bunch of barriers, but the stakes can feel pretty high for people who are looking to upsize, downsize or just move house due to family circumstances or job changes. In many ways, the process is the same. You need to write your wish list – where the property is, what size it is – and think about how much you want to spend. This is where the buy first or sell first conundrum comes in, because it’s much easier to figure out how much you have to spend if you have already sold your first property. A property is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it at the time that it’s for sale. It’s unwise to hedge your bets solely on an algorithm-generated valuation, the backof-an-envelope calculation or recent rating valuations. Selling first means you have freed up any equity and you have a firmer budget to work with. However, in a slow market it can mean that you are left scrambling to find ‘the one’. Even if you do find the right property, it can take longer than you might anticipate to reach settlement on it, which means you may have an unspecified period between exiting your last home and moving into your new one. This can be particularly tough for people with children and pets, especially in an area or at a time of year when there is a lot of competition for short-term rentals. If you do sell first, it’s a good idea to try to negotiate a longer settlement period to give yourselves a bit more breathing space. Ask your real estate agent and lawyer for advice on how to do this for – because you’re the seller, you get to set the terms and conditions for your sale process. Buying first makes sense in lots of ways, particularly if your search area is very defined. If a property that ticks all the boxes comes on the market it can be hard to resist the pull of putting an offer on it. If you decide to go for it, you’ll need good financial advice and nerves of steel. If your offer is accepted you may find yourself in the position of owning two properties – and having to service their respective mortgages if the settlement dates don’t align perfectly. You are likely to need bridging finance to cover your offer on the new home – depending on your circumstances and the method of sale you may need access to these funds quite quickly.
